What Is Surfercross?

Surfercross was created in 1999 by Jeremy Albrecht — a factory race mechanic who worked with AMA champions like Jeff Emig and James Stewart. The concept is straightforward and brilliant: two-person teams compete in motocross on Day 1, then the same teams compete in surfing on Day 2. Combined scores across both days determine the winner.

Teams are drawn at random — you don’t pick your partner. That’s part of what makes Surfercross special. A pro motocrosser gets paired with a pro surfer and they figure out how to win across two completely different sports. The moto day runs at Fox Raceway in Pala. The surf day runs at Trail 6 in Southern California.

Dates

August 10 & 11, 2026

Day 1

Motocross at Fox Raceway, Pala, CA

Day 2

Surfing at Trail 6, Southern California

Format

2-person randomly assigned teams. Combined score wins.

Who Participates

Surfercross draws pro motocrossers, pro surfers, and an industry class for the “desk jockeys” of the moto world. Past participants have included Mike Metzger, Tyler Bereman, Jeff Matiasevich, and Brandon Ray on the moto side alongside legitimate competitive surfers. The industry class is where the rest of us get a shot.

The moto format runs two motos with teammates alternating laps. Day 2 runs a standard surf heat format. The team with the best combined score across both days takes the title.

Day 1 we were at Fox Raceway. Day 2, we trade motorcycles for surfboards. The whole point is to showcase two extremely challenging and difficult sports in the same competition.
